Not Four Years, but for Life

Written by: Ashtyn Scruggs PC 14

Following the stress of finals week, I dove right into Alpha Phi’s Emerging Leadership Institute at Butler University and experienced the time of my life. I am beyond appreciative for the amazing opportunity I had with meeting sisters from across the nation and growing as a member of Alpha Phi.

I was apprehensive with not knowing anybody upon arrival, but soon realized I had nothing to worry about when I discovered I had a lot in common with the other girls. After meeting my suitemates, I knew our bond would last much longer than just the week we spent with one another. We grew together and learned the essentials in continuing our leadership qualities.

One of my favorite segments at ELI was the emphasis on the importance of names. We participated in several activities on the first day in efforts to learn all 50+ names of the women in attendance. This truly enhanced my experience by feeling a personal connection with everyone. Additionally, we were able to encourage each other in different activities, including a ropes course, which felt as if my feet were a mile off the ground.

Most of all, I found it inspiring to see everyone come out of their shell during the week, including myself. Not only did we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves but also what we can bring to our individual chapters. We grew as a team and were given insight on how to use our strengths as we return home. We learned about the roots upon which Alpha Phi was founded and the reasons why certain rituals are performed.

I will forever remember my time and memories made at ELI and highly encourage other Alpha Phis to apply next year! AOE
